Snake Dreams

Snake Drum

(I drew this last February, I was originally going to henna it on the head of my dream but I found out my drum is treated, so it won’t take the henna. I need an untreated drum…)

I do not know when I saw my first snake but since I can remember I visualized snakes when I was scared. Because of this I see them as a protective power animal. When I was upset the image of myself covered in snakes would come to mind, they would all be hissing at whatever bothered me. Oddly it was not until recently that I had too much of an interest in the different species of snakes, maybe because I was always covered in a variety of snakes until the past year or so.

I had two snake dreams last night:

I was trying to find my glasses [this happens occasionally in my dreams] and instead I found two snakes. One was red and black banded (kind of like this one – thanks for the picture Kyrss!) and the other was black and red with a yellow band between the stripes (Kyrss said it might be a coral snake?) I was surrounded by mirrors in this dream.

I didn’t get much of a closer look as I couldn’t find my glasses and the dream began to fade.

The next dream actually happened while I napped this morning:

I was standing under the World Tree and there was a large snake hanging from one of its branches. I had my glasses in this dream I guess and I saw the snake quite well as I was only standing a couple feet from it.

[It was greenish/brown, more green then brown, with egg shaped yellow eyes and round pupils. It's scales were quite well defined because each one seemed to have black line around the edge. It was moderately skinny snake that was maybe 4 feet long. I am thinking it might be a boomslang?]

The tree was beautiful, it had branches that were in all seasons and I could hear the calls of various animals in its branches. Both the sun and the moon were high above, stars were out in one portion of the sky. I recognized one of my guides, a white raven on a branch near by as well as a green mamba. They did not seem to notice me in the dream though, so I returned focus to the first snake. He did not speak to me in the dream but I felt at peace with him near. I also got a strong mental image of a snake being my backbone and the pathway between my chakras.

The snake is one of my favorite aspects of symbolism. I wrote about it in my diary awhile ago:

In ever culture you will find legends of the serpent. It is a creature who cannot leave the ground, therefor tied to base desires and material matters. But it is also a creature about to shed its own skin and because of this, it is a powerful symbol of resurrection, rebirth and self-awakening. These two factors give the snake its dual nature, linking it both to the Heavens and the Earth.

Since becoming pregnant I have found myself more drawn to the snake as my totem. In my dreams she often appears as the blue eyes bringer of wisdom, as well as a birther of creation and manifestation. In a lot of ways her dyadic nature is reflected in another of my totems, the white raven. I wonder if there are any ties between the vulture and the snake? Weren’t they both on the Pharaoh’s crown?

In the past year I have noticed three reoccurring snakes in my meditations and dreams. The first is the green mamba, the second is a black and white sea krait. Both these always have blue eyes, though in the physical world there eyes are different. The third snake, and most recent is this black/yellow/red snake or red/black, which has only appeared fleetingly since I have become pregnant.

Any thoughts on possible meaning of either of these dreams? I have my own thoughts but I would like to hear yours first.

It’s incredible the way our totems parallel. I’ve noticed this over the past year or so. We share affinities with corvidae (you Raven, myself Crow and to a lesser degree Raven), Vulture (you Condor, myself Turkey), and Snake thus far.

I find it fascinating, and while I have no insight of my own on the matter (as of yet), I’d be curious to hear what you think on the topic.

I really like that design for your drum! I have no power or strength whatsoever to offer insight into your dreams, unfortunately. The one image that did stick out to me was the image of a snake along your backbone and connecting your chakras. That sounds very kundalini (which is usually symbolized by a serpent or Dragon rising from the base of the spine to the crown).

Another thought I had was that I have always thought it interesting that some people consider Dragons to be the perfect metaphor for human beings–they have the reptilian groundedness like snakes, and they fly like birds. They have the unique spanning of both worlds that no other creature but humanity does.

I’ve never resonated with snakes, but one of the animals that is an extremely powerful animal for me is the Muscovy duck. Having a Muscovy duck around gives me incredible peace and focus and power. I am not sure why. Unfortunately the ducks I acquire always seem to disappear. Perhaps I do not have power enough yet to keep them in a manifested sense.

There are a lot of similarities in our totems! Food for thought certainly, makes me wonder how many other aspects of our spiritual personalities match up…

I am going to blog about how I interpret the dreams I think…

I dream of snakes all the time but they attack or bite me, i have even woken up feeling pain where they bit me, I dream of my sister trying to protect me from snakes and they bite her instead. I have dreamt of a giant snake wrapped around a man way in the air. So far, no snake has spoken to me and it has always been scary. I live in a country where i run into cobras sometimes, and i guess i am afraid and cobras killed my dog for barking at it. But even if i dont think about snakes i get dreams and if i do think about them well i am guaranteed to dream of them.

    Hi!
Snakes are a wonderful totem, each species has it’s own unique personality, I often find that snakes represent psychic ability, connection to earth, groundedness, and fertility. Snakes in the tree, well that would tell me when it comes to your spirituality you are very grounded, you see things in the earth that represent spirtuality for you, you don’t go looking up to the sky, but are a more practical spiritualist, recognizing you need look no further than yourself to find true meanings to life. Snakes are also known for their wisdom, and protection, so I am not suprised that you used them in that capacity when you were a child.
I just happened upon the site, btw, very nice, and thought that I would comment. As I myself am very drawn to the species. I believe that your friend was right talking of the kundalini, which is believed to purify the chakras as well as bring a time of spiritual enlightenment when fully extended and not coiled.
    Brightest Blessings,
    Beckah

I came across your site and was absolutely shocked to see that someone else has dreamt of a black/yellow/red snake! On September 20th I got married and so we were on our honeymoon when I had this dream. ( I always have dreams, but this particular one seems to have stuck in my mind for some reason, even though nothing signifigant happened in the dream?) I was in a lush jungle, alone, when I came across this massive (20 feet long and very thick) black snake with alternating thick stripes of yellow and red. Literally, all that I can remember i that of course I was fearful of it, just due to the size of it. The colours were so vibrant. One thing to note…the snake didn’t even look at me…in fact I had an aerial view of it? Any ideas on how to interpret this one?? Thanks!

hi, wow. so i was googling snakes trying to find a picture of a particular snake and came across this site. you all have had some amazing dreams it sounds like!

i actually didn’t dream of a snake, but i found two yesterday–in the middle of january (i live in baltimore, so it was in the 30s). i was drawn to walk a different way than i normally do when walking my dog, when i came across two snakes on the sidewalk in front of me. they were tiny (about 6″ long or so), so at first, i thought they were two twigs, but then realized they were two snakes. one was white and was lying across the other dark brown one, and they were sort of in a cross shape. to be honest, i didn’t think THAT much of it until two friends of mine pointed out that it’s the middle of january, AND i live in a city, and what would snakes be doing out like that?

when i looked more closely at them, the white one was actually bright red with three wide black bands, and it was its stomach that was white–so it was lying upside down on the other snake.

does anyone have any idea what this might mean? thanks so much for any thoughts/insights you might have!
    beth

p.s. i add that i’ve had a bunch of other things happening, including some pretty surreal dreams, and appearances by other animals–for example, i actually had a HAWK sitting at my kitchen window staring in at me–and as i mentioned, i live in a city, so it seemed a bit odd.
