Nursing Bra Question

I have a question for mothers who have breastfed, what kind of nursing bra did you use?

I bought a cheap one from Walmart awhile ago (the only type that they had) and it is really uncomfortable now (I loath underwire and I don’t believe it really makes a difference.) I use to be a 36B cup but now I am a 36C. From what I understand when the baby is born my breasts will get even bigger? (Sweet.) My breast tissue is rather tender lately as well and going braless is not an option because I already need to wear breast pads almost all the time.

I don’t have a lot of disposable income so it needs to be reasonably priced. I don’t need it to be cute or lacy (never thought I would be saying that…) I need it to be effective. I put a few different kinds on my Amazon Baby Registry (scroll to the bottom) that look comfortable – has anyone used any of those types? What did you think of them?

Any other suggestions would be welcome too!

NO underwire! I bought nursing bras from WalMart and got the softest most comfortable kind I could find. And yes, your boobs will bet bigger when your milk comes in. When I got pregnant I was a 36B. After my milk came in I was a 38DD!. Once they got used to feeding babies, they went down to a more reasonable 38D. Now, 7 seven years post nursing they are back to their 36B, and still nice and perky :-)

Yep, they keep on getting bigger, especially right after delivery. They will also shrink and grow somewhat over the course of the day (filling up and emptying with feedings).

Go to a pregnancy boutique store for a true fitting, but don’t buy bras there unless they’re marked way down. Pregnancy stores tend to sell very cheaply made, yet somehow very overpriced, goods. I bet you can find some online for a reasonable price, or eBay may be an excellent place to shop.

I bought nursing bras from Target, usually whatever was on clearance in my size. Heavy cotton, no fancy stuff. I wear underwire in civilian life (38C), but did not for nursing (40DD/F).

The bras need to be stretchy but very supportive, but it’s good to have one very soft, not so supportive one just for sleeping in (to keep those pads on you at night).

BTW, I used washable pads rather than disposables. The disposables saturated way too quickly and you could crank right through a package in no time. The washable ones can go through the laundry as long as you don’t dry them in the dryer.

I am using washable pads at the moment (I try to not use disposable stuff) and really like them. A friend gave me some disposable ones and they are itchy (like a maxipad on my nipple) and I soaked through them just with colostrum in half a day! (I have been lactating enough to need breast pads since I was 28 weeks.) XD

Thank you for the advice on bras, I ended up getting one at baby’s r us today and it is super comfortable and supportive. They had sleeping bras but none in my size, I heard they had the same bra at Target for cheaper though. Waiting to see what my breasts do first before buying more though.

Since my breasts were already sorta large before I got pregnant (36C, but uncomfortably tight), they didn’t really get that much bigger (38D). The nursing bras I wore (and still wear because nothing else fits!!) are Playtex. They are kinda lacy, but they worked great for breastfeeding. I guess my breasts didn’t get that big because I couldn’t supply enough milk to feed my daughter. At least she is a happy, healthy 13-month-old!! (Actually, she’s got a double ear infection, her first since she’s been born, and a slight cold.) Anyways, those Playtex bras can be found at KMart and are quite comfortable if you get the right size. They are the same price as any average bra, which makes them not exactly cheap but not exactly expensive, either. I can’t remember how much they were exactly because my mom bought them for me.

That is actually one of the ones I tried on the other day and maybe it is just my breasts but it was sooo uncomfortable, itchy and ill fitting, no matter what size I tried. Maybe my breasts are the wrong shape or something for them at the moment.

I can’t believe she is already 13 months! Has it been that long? Wow! :-) Happy belated birthday to her!
