Thoughts of a Canadian living in the USA

America
Before I launch into this post, I just want to say – the holograms on CNN? 100% AWESOME!
Beam me up Wolf!

Anyhow… I often feel, if you choose not to vote, then you do not have the right to complain! I am Canadian though, so it is not that I wouldn’t vote, but obviously, I am not allowed (and at an initial $700 filing fee, I cannot afford to become a citizen.) I am still going to share my thoughts though.

I watched as my husband filled out his mail out ballot, we both would have voted the same (more or less.) We think the government should stay the heck away from our families, our businesses and our rights. To quote Gerald Ford, “If the government is big enough to give you everything you want, it is big enough to take away everything you have.”

Locally, I would have voted no on I-985 (which re-directed funds from tolls, fines and red light cameras to projects aimed at reducing traffic congestion) this side of the state would have never seen any of that money. Luckily that initiative failed. I also would have voted no on I-1029, which unfortunately passed overwhelmingly (this will create statewide standards for training and licensing adult care workers, effective of 2010.) And lastly I would have voted yes on I-1000 (medically assisted suicide, allowing doctors to prescribe lethal medication to terminally ill patients) and am happy to report that this has passed, making us the second state (after Oregon) to allow it.

Michael and my choices for local and state offices were pretty well spread throughout the parties, mostly we got who we wanted, with one large disappointment, but we cannot always get what we want can we? (Because if we got what I wanted Ron Paul would be president. Hehe!) Thank goodness Dino Rossie lost though!

Presidential election… as he said on Twitter, Michael voted for Nader, I probably would have swung that way as well. Ideologically I cannot support the Republicans, fiscally I am not much of a fan of the Democrats. Obama is our president now, a democrat, and I must admit I found myself remarkably unmoved by his speech (I laughed about the puppy remark though.) I don’t care that he is black (granted it does show Americans are capable of looking beyond race,) just like I didn’t care about Palin being a woman, or McCain being old, or Biden being white… I care about the issues. Funnily enough, I was more moved by McCain’s concession speech, very humble and more open then I have ever seen him.

I guess I am jaded when it comes to politics, after a looong race, I simply do not care anymore. That said, if Obama does bring change, I would support him next election (who knows maybe I will be a citizen then.) I like that he has given people something to vote for (rather then against.) I just need to see his words turned into action to believe that he is something more then an excellent public speaker. (We must also remember the president does not have as much power as most people think, local elections are far more important to me.)

So for me it is less of a Yes We Can and more of a We Will See.
